*Volunteers needed - see below!*

June OPC meeting:

When: Wednesday, June 4 6:30pm 'til the cows come home!
Where: Smugglers Landing Restaurant, 115 E Railroad Ave, Port Angeles, WA 98362

Did you participate in the Coastal Cleanups this past April?  Either way, come check out an awesome slide show of all the hard working, rain-soaked, well-fed, smiling volunteers who spent their Saturday cleaning up the beautiful beaches of the Olympic Coast!

We are counting down the days until the much-awaited International Surf Day celebrations!  Learn more about all the great raffle items we will be giving way, how you can help with event preparation, and help us distribute tickets and posters around the community.

*VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Do you want to be an official judge and hand out prizes for a sand castle competition on Saturday, June 7?  See below for event details and email us if you are interested!  We will even throw in an OPC tshirt for whoever helps out!

We will also hear the latest on the Lafarge property, Surfrider policy updates, and talk about how we can be involved in the community event on June 6 and 7 hosted by Olympic Climate Action.

See you there!

COASST Beached Bird Training

BEACHWALKERS & BIRDERS WANTED!

Help make a difference for the environment by collecting data for the Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team (COASST).  COASST is a citizen science project dedicated to involving volunteers in the collection of high quality data on the status of coastal beaches, and trends of seabirds. Our goal is to assist government agencies and other organizations in making informed management and conservation decisions, and promote proactive citizen involvement and action. COASST volunteers systematically count and identify bird carcasses that wash ashore along ocean beaches from northern California to Alaska.  Volunteers need NO experience with birds, just a commitment to survey a specific beach (about 3/4 mile) each month.

If you are interested in participating, join COASST staff for a full, 6-hour training session. Hear about how COASST started, learn how to use the custom Beached Birds field guide, and try out your new skills with some actual specimens.  There is no charge to attend a training, but plan to provide a $20 refundable deposit if you would like to take home a COASST volunteer kit complete with a COASST Beached Birds field guide. Training activities take place indoors.
