Local resident Nick Parry describes the plastic problem we are facing in our marine waters in a recent letter to the editor featured in the Peninsula Daily News. We've all seen the increase of plastics on our beaches and in our waters so this timely letter is worth the read and thanks for spreading the word Nick!
On page B10 of the Thursday PDN, somewhat inconspicuous, below the weather and tides is an article about plastic pollution in ocean waters. I can’t help but wonder why that is not front page news, that is the study revealing that there is an enormous amount of plastic in the ocean. I encourage everyone to read this article and then check out the Surfrider Foundation and the campaign to “just say no to plastic”. The tendency is to shrug our shoulders and go on enjoying the convenience of plastic everything, assuming the attitude that we can’t really do much to affect any kind of real change. And the ocean garbage continues to grow, to the detriment of all sea life and ultimately all humans. We don’t need to buy our water in small plastic bottles. Get a filter and fill up a reusable container. Recycle and use cloth bags for groceries. Say no to plastic whenever possible. Or just ignore the problem and if while walking on your favorite beach you wonder where all the trash came from, the answer is in the mirror.
